We can help you to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act

The Disability Discrimination Act protects disabled people from discrimination in areas of education, employment and access to goods and facilities. It is now unlawful to treat disabled people less favourably than others, and service providers must make reasonable adjustments to premises to overcome physical barriers to access and to provide auxiliary aids for disabled people.

Hi Kent can provide induction loops, text telephones and other equipment to meet the requirements of the DDA for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.   Call on the experience Hi Kent has accumulated over many years, we will be happy to discuss how your organisation can comply with the Act. We will be happy to visit your premises within Kent, or neighbouring counties.

LOCAL CLIMBERS AIMING TO BOOST KENT DEAF CHARITY

Three young men from Kent are undertaking the famous Three Peaks Challenge next month to raise funds for the county’s deaf charity Hi Kent.

John Saunders, Graham Ford and Peter Acott, who are former schoolmates from Maidstone, will attempt to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon, the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales respectively, all within a 24-hour period, on 6/7 June.

Group Leader John Saunders, who is the Partnership Development Manager for the Astor of Hever School Sports Partnership, said:

We are looking forward to the challenge and hope to raise a lot of money for this very worthwhile cause.
We are also hoping a local company will sponsor us to cover the costs of making the trip, which will come to £500.”

The team of climbers is hoping to raise £5,000 to support Hi Kent’s work.

Hi Kent provides advice and assistive equipment for people with a hearing loss all over Kent. It was the only voluntary organisation in Kent to win the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service last year.
You may make a donation to help this excellent effort on behalf of local d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, or obtain sponsorship forms from Hi Kent:  Please call 01622 691151.

LOCAL DEAF CHARITY RUNNING SIGN LANGUAGE COURSE IN MAIDSTONE

The county’s deaf and hard of hearing charity, Hi Kent, is now taking bookings for its next British Sign Language Course in Maidstone.

The Level 1 Unit 2 course will run on four consecutive Saturdays starting 29th March in Maidstone town centre.

Hi Kent’s Sign Language courses have been running for many years and have an outstanding success record.

The Level 1 qualification has been revamped and students can now take it in three separate Units. This makes it easier for people to study in more manageable chunks, and spreads the cost.

Course Co-ordinator Naomi Baxter said:

“This course is great for anyone who wants to achieve the qualification quickly. People come from all over Kent and beyond to attend our courses, and the cost of Unit 2, which takes just four days of study, is only £185 including the end of course assessment.

“Many people find this preferable to signing up for a year of evening classes.

“Students will be taught in a friendly group by a qualified BSL tutor with a great track record. Students who then wish to move on to Unit 3 will get priority on those courses which will follow on in late Spring.

“Only 14 places are available, so it is important to book early.”
