Deaf Awareness Training


Hi Kent adopt a flexible approach to Awareness Training and will provide courses tailored to include specific elements of benefit to the client group.

Typical courses delivered include:

Training for Care Staff an intensive one-day course providing background knowledge and practical skills appropriate to care of the elderly with a hearing loss.

Participants will: Be able to clean, re-tube and change batteries of standard hearing aids. Understand the different types of hearing aid and identify NHS aids.

Be able to apply effective communication techniques with hard-of-hearing clients.

Be aware of other supportive services and equipment aids to assist deaf and hearing impaired people. Differentiate between the differing degrees of hearing loss and relevant needs.

A Certificate of Competence is awarded to students who successfully complete the course.


Training for Frontline Staff and helping you to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

An intensive half-day course providing background knowledge to assist frontline staff offering services to deaf and hearing impaired customers or clients.


Participants will: Understand the needs of Sign Language users and Hard-of-Hearing people with or without hearing aids. Be able to apply effective communication techniques. Be aware of other supportive services and equipment aids to assist deaf and hearing impaired people.

A Certificate of Competence will be awarded to students who successfully complete the course.


Training for interested individuals is provided at specially arranged one-day courses.

Sign Language Courses


Sign Language is a visual language through which the severely and profoundly deaf can communicate without speech.

Hi Kent provides British Sign Language training through non-residential weekend courses.

All tutors are qualified and experienced, producing consistently high success rates.

Courses offered:


Leading to CACDP* Level I.

It has the aim of preparing students for the nationally recognised CACDP Level I Assessment.

The cost of this 4-weekend Course is £302. (includes examination fees).


Leading to CACDP* Level II.

It has the aim of preparing students for the nationally recognised CACDP Level I1 Assessment.

Next Course: Provisional start March 2005.

The Course delivers the 90 hours classroom based tuition required. Intensive study weekends are held - one a month for 7 months. Students must be prepared to devote at least 30 hours to private study at home.

The cost of this extensive Course is £525. (Excludes the examination fees which are payable directly to CACDP*).

Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People, the national examination board for communication skills with deaf people.
